PepsiCo annual report

Posted: September 6, 2012 in Uncategorized

The PepsiCO annual report is a yearly report that is meant to show the public and most importantly PesiCo’s share holders how the company is doing. The audience of the message is the Public like I said, but most importantly the share holders. Without reports like these share holders would not want to invest in PepsiCo. The share holders have to have an executive to hold accountable for the companies profit margin.

I think that the form of which the message is posted is a good one because it is in a central spot where everyone can find it. The interactive nature of the report also helps people easily see what type of profit margins PepsiCo had. It even compares those margins to the margins in previous years.

Although the report is somewhat long for a share holder letter, I think it serves its purpose well. When share holders read the report they will realize that PepsiCo is a company that can be easily held accountable. I really like in the report where they say what the reasons for the profit margin are and how they will look to improve this in the next year. In a world of business communication share holders what to know what happen and how it will be improved. The report accomplishes those goals.

John Roberts, Director of Roberts Manufacturing

Dear Mr. Roberts:

While I understand your company policy on social media, I have a few suggestions that you may help you learn how helpful it can be to the company. Social media has opened the door to a whole new world of customers. It would allow our company to interact with those customers in real time. This means that if we have a message to get out, it would make it to our customers as soon as we post it.

Social media also allows our company to interact with our customers everyday life by posting cool things going on at the factory. We could even use a little humor to keep the company in the back of our customers mind. I have researched a a company called York Saw and Knife that uses this to their advantage.

Here is the link to their Twitter feed. http://twitter.com/yorksaw

If you have any questions about how we can make something of this nature work for our company please contact me.

Thanks for your time,

There could not be a better example of visual story telling. I choose this photo because it tells a story of how a boy is starving in a third world country. The story that the picture tells is one that some people do not want to hear about. People complain everyday about things that are not nearly as meaningful as a boy about to die of starvation. This photo has to make people look at their life and wonder if it really is that bad. Look at this photo and think to yourself. What is really so bad about your life? Your not underfeed are you?

Richard Hernandez hit a home run when he identified “2 Visual Journalist you don’t know, but should.” The two visual journalist that Hernandez identified not only have great talent for creating, but also for telling a story visually. He placed the spotlight on two up and coming visual journalist, Maisie Crow, and Daniel Mercadante. The story they tell with their work touches on the emotions and would make anyone stop to think about what he or she has viewed.

How did I pick the post?

I picked this particular post by Hernandez because the title originally drew my attention. I wanted to see the visual journalist that I should know, but don’t. The post also had examples of the journalists works to make it more appealing. Not only did it give a little insight into those works and journalist, but it also had links back to the journalists websites.

What moves you about this piece?

The piece touches my emotions because it taps into telling the story of life.In particular, Mercadante tells the story of people. People are what make any story good or bad.

Why should journalism and communication students care about this post?

The communication world should know that these visual journalists are great examples of how journalism does not just come in the form of text. Visually, a story can be told just as in-depth as a written story.

What can we learn about becoming better “content creators” from this piece?

The main thing I think that we can take away from this post is the fact that a story can be told in more than one way. As journalists, we should always be looking for the best ways to tell a particular story.

Save Early Save Often

Swyers/ Importance of Saving

Has anyone ever heard the saying, “Save early, save often?” Well, that saying should be something every college student should think about as he or she works toward their academic degrees. The country is in no shape for a student to think that the company they’ll get their job with will provide some sort of retirement or savings plan. Most of you are probably thinking you do not need to save now. There is plenty of time in the future. That assumption could not be more wrong.

Most students will graduate with an average of $25,000 in student loan debt, according to The New York Times Co. With that kind of debt coming out of college, not considering the credit card debt that most students also fall into, it is essential to have a savings plan. A savings account, certificate of deposit (CD) or an Individual Retirement Account is the best way to start a long-term savings plan. Although most savings accounts are not gaining much interest right now, the point is not to save money by gaining interest.

The thing to think about with any type of savings account is to save money by putting a little away at a time. Even $5 a week is a good starting amount.  Not considering any interest on an account, at $5 a week, you could save up roughly $7500 by the time you retire. I would say that is pretty good for only $5 a week.

The most popular form of savings is IRA’s. Most IRA’s earn a higher interest than a regular savings account and are tax-free.  A little bit of savings put away into an IRA can go a long way in paying back college debt or planning ahead to retirement.

Many plans like these will accumulate the most money over the long run, but do have their disadvantages.  If someone decides to take money out early, they will most likely pay a penalty, often times a pretty hefty one.

Time is everything. Every week that goes by without a savings plan is money that you are losing. As a college student, you should have the intelligence to know that money is hard earned. Why not take the easy money that everyone has the opportunity to get? Start a savings plan today. Every day that goes by is another dollar you are losing in the long run.

Swyers/ Facebook Toys with New Idea

Recently Facebook has purchased three new URL’S with the name Facebook Newsroom incorporated in them, according to mediabistro.com. Many people have speculated about the possibility of Facebook entering the online news world. Facebook is already a valuable branding tool for many business’s and journalist alike.  Journalist have used Facebook for branding purposes for years now, but have never been able to use the social media platform for news gathering or delivery on a large scale. This new feature that Facebook could possibly institute has the potential to turn into one of the best news delivery sources for journalists moving forward.

How It Pertains to Class and Student Journalist

In “Journalism 2.0” the author talks about how social networking is the future for journalist. No one could have imagined the effects that Facebook has had on society when it first started. After applying some concepts that I have learned in class I believe that the Facebook as news median could be a giant. Google reader sends news to the people who do not want to go to many different sites to find news. The readers have become very successful because people want to go to one site to get there news.  Facebook could deliver news to people in one place as well as provide the same benefit s to people that it already has for years. It could become an all in one shot.

Surprising? I think not?

I was not surprised when I heard that Facebook could be entering the online news world. They had already scratched the surface with people posting their own unique content in news worthy situations, but they have not been major player in news delivery yet. Journalism students should keep an eye on this because they may be able start using Facebook as a news gathering tool in the future. The same website that students got yelled at for being on in class could potentially be the site teacher’s reference news from.

Facebook’s Influence

Let’s think of how many people visit Facebook every day to check or update their status. The numbers are astounding. Facebook is everywhere, on people’s phone, their computer and even their game systems. No matter what type of person, it seems everyone has Facebook or has at least heard of it.  A site with so many followers is a great place to put news. Everyone needs to follow the news because it is important for people to be aware of their surroundings.  Facebook could reach a wider variety of people that any other news site ever could.

People that do not even search for news online would see news and people would also see news that they were not searching for. No one knows that exact format or what the newsroom would be like, but with Facebook’s popularity it is sure to be a success. This new chapter of Facebook could also create many more jobs for journalism students in the future. People can visit allfacebook.com or investorplace.com to read more.
